The NCTA will be having a board of directors meeting with a public comment period at the end. No Tolls on 540 will be present outside their facility beginning at 12 noon. If you would like to rally with us, be there! The NCTA offices are located here: http://www.ncturnpike.org/contact/ - we'll be outside the front of the building with a LARGE sign!

NCTA looks to public-private partnerships
The News & Observer reports: http://www.newsobserver.com/news/story/659773.html Lawmakers leave turnpike in a ditch. While this is great news in one respect, now the NCTA is looking at public-private partnerships. If they are successful, private investors will have their hands on our roads, and with tolls on those roads generating revenue to fatten their pockets, why would they ever want to remove the toll? So, how much longer then would the NCTA have to keep tolls on the road... indefinitely. On a road in Indiana, one such public-private partnership has been setup with tolls for 75 years! This move has to be stopped.

FLIP-FLOP goes the vote - House changes mind - so does Senate
In a last minute vote, the House changed their decision and has approved giving the NCTA the $20 million it needs to begin the toll road project for 540. See the news here: http://www.wral.com/news/local/politics/story/1664357/ No Tolls on 540 has made an inquiry into how they found this new money at such a last minute, what did they allow to happen to gain this fortune? So, at this point, can it be stopped? That is to be seen. Stay tuned. - Additional info, moments after this original post, the article was updated and the measure did not pass the Senate. The fight continues!

NC House says NO!
Alright! This is bad news for the NCTA and great news for No Tolls on 540! Here is the WRAL story breaking the news: http://www.wral.com/news/local/story/1659006/. I would like to thank members of the House for realizing that raising taxes to build a toll road is a ridiculous idea. Please continue to sign our petition to stop tolls on 540. Our battle for No Tolls on 540 continues!

I-540 to become NC-540??
Yes, that's right. This new stretch of road about to open will be called NC-540 because the Federal government will not allow it to be called I-540 if it is to be tolled in the future. Yes, this road will open FREE, but then it will become tolled unless we stop it. You will pay for this stretch of road twice. How does that make you feel? Please sign the Online Petition, but most importantly, write your NC Legislature representatives. You can read about this latest news here: http://www.wral.com/traffic/story/1561552

State budget is without toll road funding "so far" reports WRAL
That's right, the NC Senate and House may not have the money, this is good for our fight to stop tolls on 540! It seems the NCTA has not taken a look at NC to see where (IF) toll roads are even viable. Someone said here, make these roads tolled and do what it takes to make it happen, which is the wrong approach to putting tolls anywhere in NC. At any rate, here is the latest news on the subject of gap funding from WRAL: http://www.wral.com/traffic/story/1460579/.
Please WRITE your NC Senate and House reps (state level, not national) and let them know you do not want tolls on 540!

The NCTA gets a win today... Only Apex Mayor Keith Weatherly voted no. Thank you Mayor Weatherly for making your stand and truly representing the people of Apex. Now it is up to the NC Legislature to find the GAP funding.

NCTA BOD Officially Names the Road
At the NCTA BOD meeting this afternoon, they officially approved a motion to call the road the "Triangle Expressway" and to nickname it "Tri-X", which is what they hope traffic reporters will call the road. There you have it, the road will not be called 540 if the NCTA has their way.

WOW, Local Mayors Vote occurs MAY 16, 4-6PM at the CAMPO Meeting!!
OK, talk about being snuck up on! As seen at the Apex Town meeting tonight, the NCTA is completely unprepared with details of the plans necessary for our Mayors to make a proper vote for tolls. The public is welcome, there IS A PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD near the beginning of this meeting. Details here: http://www.campo-nc.us/TAC_Agenda/2007/Agenda-TAC-2007-05-16.htm. David (from No Tolls on 540) and another concerned citizen both addressed the NCTA BOD during the public comment period of the 4/18 meeting.
